While theories about Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister sweep the Internet, a “Game of Thrones” supporting character is starting to generate plenty of buzz.

Hodor played a prominent role in last Sunday’s episode, as Bran visits the past and sees a young version of the gentle giant, known at the time as Wylis. Not only that, but he could actually talk in full sentences.

In light of this startling revelation, people have begun to piece together what they believe is the true story of Hodor’s origin, and it makes quite a bit of sense.

The theory is: Hodor was a warg who stayed in his animal so long that he lost part of himself.

Two redditors have broken it down in detail. Jojen Reed once warned Bran about the dangers of staying within the mind of an animal for too long, and it is said in the source books that if a warg’s animal is killed while they possess it, it can cause them to lose their minds.

In Sunday’s episode, we see that Hodor was once a stable boy for the Starks, and was clearly nervous around Lyanna. If he was in fact a warg, it makes sense that he would take control of a horse, possibly Lyanna’s if he was infatuated with her.

In the books, Hodor has been compared to a horse numerous times, due in part to the fact that Bran Stark often rides around on his back after having lost the use of his legs.

Another redditor pointed out a scene at the end of Season 4, in which the Three Eyed Raven tells Bran, Hodor and Meera Reed that he has been watching all of them for their entire lives. Why would this mystical being watch Hodor unless he had a specific purpose to play in the war to come?
