An underwater ice-crystal horse, a rock that becomes a troll and giants in the enchanted lands all appear in the first trailer for this fall’s “Frozen 2.”
Elsa (Idina Menzel) is also back, with her icy powers still intact, and backed by her loyal sister, Anna (Kristen Bell) — as well as their pals Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf the snowman (Josh Gad) and Sven the reindeer.
Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey in the enchanted lands up north. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough.
Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez return for the sequel to the 2013 hit.
The original “Frozen” earned more than $400 million at the domestic box office on a $150 million budget, per Box Office Mojo. Adding in worldwide ticket sales, that revenue soared to nearly $1.3 billion. We can’t even comprehend how much more money the franchise has brought to Disney in terms of consumer goods sales.
“Frozen” was also a big hit among critics and won two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the inescapable “Let It Go.” The animated film currently has a 90 percent “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have it at 85 percent, same as “top critics.”
“Frozen 2” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22.
