Netflix’s latest comedy centers around an ensemble cast of college friends. Keegan Michael-Key’s Ethan and Annie Parisse’s Sam are two married college friends having an affair with each other — an affair that has lasted 20 years. When Ethan and his wife Lisa (Cobie Smulders) move to New York, the college group is reunited and dramatics ensue. None of the characters are particularly redeemable. Find out why and explore our ranking:
8. Felix (Billy Eichner)
Felix is the outsider in the group. He’s Max’s (Fred Savage) boyfriend who also happens to be Lisa and Ethan’s IVF doctor. He doesn’t really belong in the group because he enjoys things like clean apartments and getting to bed on time for surgery the next day. And while he can be a bit socially awkward at times, he means well.
7. Marianne (Jae Suh Park)
Marianna is quirky in a fun way, but she does run the party bus into a bridge on purpose just to make a point, and also doesn’t think she needs to RSVP to weddings.
6. Shawna (Kate McKinnon)
McKinnon plays a young adult fiction author who could easily fit into a sketch on “Saturday Night Live.” But you get over her character’s eccentricities pretty fast.
5. Nick (Nat Faxon)
For being part of the group, Nick doesn’t do much for the majority of the show (until the last two episodes, which we won’t spoil). He’s a trust fund baby who the others tease for being a womanizer.
4. Lisa (Cobie Smulders)
Let’s be honest, it’s hard not to think of Lisa as a more buttoned-up version of Robin Scherbatsky from “How I Met Your Mother.” She keeps getting the short end of the stick, and then when she does do a bad thing, she almost immediately confesses. At one point, her husband Ethan and Sam make out just steps away a dinner party, and at another point Ethan purposefully breaks the vial of IVF treatment that cost them $30,000.
3. Max (Fred Savage)
Max might be the easiest of the friends to like, especially because his college buds are constantly using him with no appreciation — like when Lisa and Ethan interrupt his birthday dinner, not even realizing it’s his birthday. But, he’s a pretty terrible boyfriend by constantly ignoring Felix, so that’s why he ranks high here.
2. Sam (Annie Parisse)
It’s a pretty big jump here into the top two horrible characters on the show. Sam is simply awful, considering she has two kids, a husband and a 20-year affair. Plus, she is constantly trying to hang out and be “friends” with Lisa, the wife of the man she’s cheating with.
1. Ethan (Keegan Michael-Key)
Ethan tops this list, hands down. He spends the entire show relying on his wife and friends for things he should be doing himself, on top of having sex with Sam every chance he gets while he and Lisa are desperately trying to get pregnant.
