Francis Ford Coppola Thriller to Star Val Kilmer & Elle Fanning

Bruce Dern also stars in the film, which “The Godfather” director is financing independently

Val Kilmer, Elle Fanning and Bruce Dern are set to star in Francis Ford Coppola's next film "Twixt Now and Sunrise," reports Deadline.

The project, described as a thriller with overtones of horror, casts Kilmer as a horror novelist.

The script is based on one of Coppola's short stories, and production is currently underway in Napa.

Coppola is financing the project independently and has not yet started searching for distribution, though he has plenty of experience as a genre filmmaker, having directed "Dementia 13" early in his career before graduating to the gothic canvas of "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

After directing "The Rainmaker," Coppola took nearly a decade off before returning with 2007's "Youth Without Youth." His last movie was the underrated black-and-white drama "Tetro," which featured excellent performances from Vincent Gallo and then-newcomer Alden Ehrenreich.

Coppola has plenty of experience as a genre filmmaker, having directed "Dementia 13" early in his career before graduating to the gothic canvas of "Bram Stoker's Dracula."

Kilmer has been working hard to recapture his mojo, with juicy supporting roles in "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" and "Macgruber," in which he played the villainous Dieter von Cunth.

Apparently, Coppola chased Kilmer to star in "Sunrise," which could be the big screen comeback the actor has been waiting for. Who knows, maybe Coppola's film will do for him what Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" did for John Travolta.

Dern previously worked with Coppola in 1974 on "The Great Gatsby," which the latter wrote. The Oscar-nominated actor recently wrapped the indies "Choose" and "Inside Out," and will soon begin filming a big screen adaptation of "The Big Valley." I've long-considered Dern one of my favorite characters thanks to his performances in "Black Sunday" and "the 'burbs," and he continues to stand out playing Bill Paxton's kooky father on HBO's "Big Love."

Fanning next stars opposite Stephen Dorff in Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere." She's currently shooting J.J. Abrams' secretive alien-themed blockbuster "Super 8." The up-and-coming young actress is represented by Osbrink Talent Agency and One Talent Management.

Kilmer is represented by ICM, while Dern is repped by CAA and Pure Arts.
