Focus Features has picked up U.S. distribution rights to "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," a comedy starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, the studio announced Monday.
Filming begins this month in Los Angeles.
The movie is set in the close future — but as proof that this is not a young adult movie, it's not a dystopian future. It is, however, a bleak future: In it, humanity's last days are at hand, and Dodge, played by Carell, meets Penny, played by Knightley.
According to Focus, as Dodge's and Penny's lives converge, "the two spark to each other and their outlooks — if not the world's — brighten."
Lorene Scafaria, who wrote the screenplay adaptation of the 2008 "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," wrote and is directing the movie.
Indian Paintbrush and Mandate Pictures are co-financing. Steve Golin and Joy Gorman, of Anonymous Content, Steven Rales, of Indian Paintbrush and Mark Roybal, of Mandate, are producing.
