First Look at Matt Ryan in NBC’s DC Comic Book Adaptation ‘Constantine’ (Photo)

Keanu Reeves previously played the part in a movie based on the DC comic book character

NBC released the first image of its newest hero, John Constantine, as played by Matt Ryan in “Constantine,” the upcoming television adaptation of the DC Entertainment character previously portrayed by Keanu Reeves in a 2005 movie.

The image (below) coincides with the start of production on the pilot being directed by Neil Marshall (“The Descent”).  David S. Goyer, who has adapted several other comic book properties — including the “Dark Knight” trilogy — executive produces with Daniel Cerone (“The Mentalist”).

The series follows follows an enigmatic and irreverent Liverpool con-man-turned-occult-detective, who is reluctantly thrust into the role of defending our world against dark forces from beyond.

“I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers,” Goyer said in a statement. “Fans old and new are going to be in for a treat.”
