The GEICO 500 race at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama was marred by multiple crashes Sunday, including a so-called “‘Big One,” involving 17 cars that made the NASCAR competition look more like a demolition derby.
Even Dale Earnhardt Jr. had car trouble, skidding and crashing into his teammate No. 5 Kasey Kahne early in the race. He rejoined the track after a fix only to crash again — into No. 19 Carl Edwards on Lap 110. Earnhardt’s car caught fire as his hood smashed over his windshield.
The driver admitted his beloved Amelia — a Chevy Chassis named after the famed aviator Amelia Earhart — was probably due for retirement after his 40th-place finish.
“Hell, I’m going home. I’m done,” Earnhardt said (via Nascar.com). “We need to park the car for a while, too.”
Brad Keselowski was confirmed as the winner of Sunday’s GEICO 500.
