‘Fast Color’ Filmmaker Julia Hart: Disney Hired Me to Direct ‘Stargirl’ at 5 Months Pregnant (Video)

Julia Hart, director of the SXSW feature “Fast Color,” was excited to talk about her next project: an adaptation of the YA novel “Stargirl” that will be one of the first original films for Disney’s upcoming streaming service.

“We’re not supposed to think this is cool because we think this is what people should do, but Disney hired me at five months pregnant to direct this movie,” Hart told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman Sunday during the second annual BE Conference in Austin.

“That’s what these studios and companies are supposed to do but we all know as women, you say the P-word or the M-word — pregnant, mom or whatever it is — and people get anxious and nervous about it,” she said, as her husband and producing partner, Jordan Horowitz, laughed and nodded beside her.

Her most recent feature, “Fast Color,” stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Saniyya Sidney, David Strathairn, and Lorraine Toussaint.

It follows a woman who is forced to go on the run when her superhuman abilities are discovered and she goes to hide in her home — although she abandoned her family years ago.

The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival on Saturday.
