“Harry Potter” actor David Thewlis has joined the cast of “Fargo” Season 3, TheWrap has learned.
The actor joins Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon in the third installment of Noah Hawley’s anthology series, which takes place in 2010.
Thewlis will play the role of V.M. Vargas, described as “a mysterious loner and true capitalist who delivers Emmit (Ewan McGregor), the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, the bad news that he has just become partners with his employers, whose business interests lay outside the law.”
McGregor is set to play duel roles as brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy at the center of the story. Emmit, the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, is a handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man who sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale. Balding and pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.
Coon plays Gloria Burgle, the chief of the Eden Valley Police, and a newly divorced mother, who is struggling to understand this new world around her where people connect more intimately with their phones than the people right in front of them.
Winstead will play the role of Nikki, described as a crafty and alluring recent parolee with a passion for competitive bridge playing. Nikki is a woman with a plan, focused on always being at least one move ahead of her opponents.
Production on the third installment of “Fargo,” from MGM Television and FX Studios, is tentatively scheduled to begin later this year and air on FX in 2017.
Hawley previously revealed the third installment of the anthology series will be set in 2010, following Season 1, which was set in 2006, and Season 2, set in 1979.
