Facebook to Launch News App With CNN, Mashable, CBS, Washington Post as Partners

New standalone app will provide breaking news alerts

Facebook will unveil a news notifications app dubbed “Notify” next week in partnership with some high-profile media brands.

CNN, Mashable, CBS News, The Washington Post and Vogue are the inaugural partners for the app.

Notify will feature “content from a range of print, digital and video companies,” the Financial Times reported.

The standalone app will refer users back to the sites of the media organizations that have published a breaking story.

That may be CNN breaking a 2016 political story or Mashable breaking new product news.

The new Facebook app joins an increasingly crowded field of social and tech initiatives to aggregate and create news.

Facebook’s own Instant Articles allows sites like The New York Times to publish stories straight to the social platform; Snapchat’s Discover creates bite-sized news and video content from partners like CNN, ESPN, Comedy Central and Vice; and Twitter recently launched its Moments feature to deliver news through curated tweets.
