Exclusive: Ruben Blades Joins Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds in ‘Safe House’

First significant movie role for actor and recording artist since his term as Panama’s minister of tourism ended

Ruben Blades, TheWrap has learned, will star in "Safe House," a thriller from Universal.

The actor, also a recording artist and former minister of tourism of Panama, joins Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington in the film.

Daniel Espinosa  is directing the film about a CIA agent (Reynolds) whose safe house is attacked and must get a criminal (Washington) to safety. Blades will play the role of Carlos Villar, a counterfeiter.

Blades has been on a musical tour since fall 2010.

"Safe House" is his first major film since his 5-year term as minister of tourism of Panama ended in 2009.

The actor is represented by Paradigm.
