Fox hopes that it’s found the new “Empire” — and the network and studio didn’t have to go very far to get it.
Lee Daniels‘ follow-up to his massive hip-hop soap opera hit has its casting underway, and the project will enter production this December in Atlanta. “Star,” from 20th Century Fox Television, is written, directed and executive-produced by Daniels. Tom Donaghy (“The Whole Truth”) will serve as a writer and executive producer on the pilot.
The project is the first to emerge from Daniels’ multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
International casting for series talent — including three female leads who will play young artists, all with hopes of making it big — is currently accepting applicants. Readers can submit an audition for “Star” here.
“Star” will feature the choices the aforementioned artists face along their way to hopeful stardom. The project promises to showcase the allure and heartache of the cut-throat music scene and exploring cultural themes from a new perspective, per Fox.
In its second season, “Empire” — a Daniels collaboration with Danny Strong — is still the top-rated show on broadcast television.
