Emmys Backstage: Alec Baldwin Sympathizes With Sean Spicer – ‘I’ve Done Some Jobs You Shouldn’t Admire Either’

Baldwin also says it will take “between three and 103” episodes for “SNL” to get Trump out of the White House

Is Hollywood welcoming Sean Spicer into its ranks? Backstage at the Emmys, Trump critic Alec Baldwin struck a conciliatory tone toward the former White House spokesman, whose surprise appearance at the top of the awards ceremony was the night’s biggest surprise.

Though Trump regularly attacks Spicer’s boss on “Saturday Night Live” — and won an Emmy Sunday night for doing so — Baldwin sounded like he doesn’t begrudge Spicer his time in Trump’s service.

“I’ve done some jobs you shouldn’t admire either, so we have that in common,” Baldwin joked.

“SNL” enlisted Melissa McCarthy to portray and belittle Spicer, who exited the White House last month.

Sunday’s telecast left little doubt about how Emmy voters feel about Trump. Besides awarding Baldwin an Emmy for his mocking impersonation of the president, they also recognized “SNL” star Kate McKinnon, who plays Hillary Clinton on the show and thanked her in her acceptance speech.

Baldwin was also asked how many episodes it would take to get Trump out of office.

“The answer is between three and 103, I’m not quite sure,” he said.  “But I know we’ll be back for the series premiere Sept. 30… We look forward to picking up where we left off.”

Baldwin also responded to a question about the importance of his role on society.

“I wouldn’t go as far as importance in our society, but I think people are overwhelmed,” he said. “A critical mass of people still don’t accept where we are. Everyday that idea is reinforced by [Trump]. I’m a conduit for that… they’re confused and in pain.”
