Playing lovers opposite another person for months on end can bring actors closer together, according to “The Night Manager” actress Elizabeth Debicki.
“I’m closest to Tom [Hiddleston],” Debicki told TheWrap. “And that’s probably because we spent about four months playing lovers. You’re up in each other’s faces quite a bit.”
On AMC’s limited series “The Night Manager,” Debicki plays Jed, the arm candy to Hugh Laurie‘s illegal arms dealer character, who finds herself drawn to Hiddleston’s undercover former soldier-turned-super spy.
Jed herself is full of layers, and Debicki attributes her ability to play someone who plays someone else to director Susanne Bier keeping it organized.
“You run the risk of getting quite lost in it,” she admitted. “One of the wonderful things about Susanne is she’s very good at keeping track of your emotional journey through the character.”
Debicki continued, “There’s a duplicity to [Jed], there’s a duality all the time. You’re trying to figure out which version of her you’re existing in. What she means versus what she’s saying, who she knows she is versus the thing she’s projecting. It definitely kept my brain ticking along while I was playing her.”
