A version of this story on Tituss Burgess first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s Comedy/Drama/Actors Emmy Issue.
Tituss Burgess knows he’s not quite as entertaining in person as his “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” character Titus Andromedon is on screen, but what’s a guy to do?
“Some people are a tad disappointed when they meet me and they realize I’m not Titus Andromedon,” he said with a shrug. “My energy level is not the 10 that my character lives at.”
But then, over the course of Season 2, Titus with one s is sued by an ex, stages a one-man show about a past life, thinks about starting a family and ends up in Titusville, Florida, singing show tunes and spewing brutally honest put-downs along the way.
“I think more of us than not live in very calculated circumstances, and are very slow to say what we feel,” said Burgess, 37.
“I don’t recommend that everyone be as blunt or as curt and tactless as Titus, but a little bit of brazen honesty and point-blank-ness goes a long way.
“I personally think it’s mean to be nice and spare the truth just to keep the peace. That’s why I love living in New York–because you always know where you stand when you’re on the subway next to that crazy person.
