Elvis has entered the building for the Independent Filmmaker Project’s 20th anniversary Gotham Independent Film Awards, which announced on Friday that its nominations will be unveiled on Monday, October 18 during a live webcast hosted by film critic and radio host Elvis Mitchell.

Mitchell, who was recently selected as one of the two co-hosts for the upcoming PBS series “Roger Ebert Presents at the Movies,” will reveal the nominees in six categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Breakthrough Director, Breakthrough Actor, Best Ensemble Performance and the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You Award.

The announcement will take place at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time, 10:00 a.m. Pacific on UStream TV. It will also be linked from IFP’s website.

The Gotham ceremony itself will take place on Monday, November 29 at Cirpriani Wall Street in New York City. Traditionally, the Gotham Awards are one of the first awards show of the season. (The other major awards show devoted to independent film, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, is nearly the last, taking place the day before the Oscars.)

Elvis MitchellBesides the competitive awards, the Gothams will present special honors to actors Robert Duvall and Hilary Swank, director Darren Aronofsky and Focus Features CEO James Schamus.

Last year’s Gotham Best Feature winner was the eventual Oscar champ, “The Hurt Locker.” Most other winners have been overlooked by the Academy, or have had to settle for nominations; they include “Frozen River,” “Into the Wild,” “Sicko,” “Half Nelson” and “Capote” (which lost for picture, director, screenplay and supporting actress, but did win for Philip Seymour Hoffman’s lead performance).
