Starz hit a landmark 22 million subscribers in a third quarter in which its net income slipped slightly from the same period a year ago.
The network’s subscribers were up 6 percent from last year, though its Encore subscribers were slightly down, from 35.1 million last quarter to 35.0 in the third. Encore subscribers were nonetheless up 2 percent since the third quarter of 2012. Combined, the networks have 57 million subscribers.

Revenues were up 11 percent to $446.1 million. Adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization was up 5 percent to $113.7 million, and operating income increased 1 percent to $100.8 million.
But net income attributable to shareholders slipped to $52.2 million, down from $56.4 million in the third quarter of 2012. Diluted earnings per share slipped from 47 cents to 43 cents.

Total costs and expenses climbed to $345.3 million, up from $301.5 million last quarter. The biggest increase was in production and acquisition costs.
The networks also reported that its miniseries “The White Queen” (pictured) averaged a strong 5 million viewers per episode, 60 percent of them women.
