“Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron is under fire for a racy offhand comment he made about professional dancer Witney Carson on Monday’s show following her performance with partner Frankie Muniz.
“@Tom_Bergeron that was so inappropriate towards Witney. And men wonder what #metoo is about,” one user tweeted, while another said, “please apologize to Witney Carson. Very mean comment and unnecessary.”
Carson and Muniz were waiting for the judge critiques after performing their waltz, and judge Carrie Ann Inaba pointed out only one flaw in their routine.
“So far for me, that was the closest thing to perfection. I mean, you are so exquisite when you dance, it’s just so clean,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I look for mistakes, but I don’t see them — except for when you almost lost control of Witney there.”
Bergeron then piped up with the comment: “I’m guessing he’s not the first guy who’s lost control of Witney.” The remark was met with gasps from the live studio audience.
According to EW, Carson told reporters after the show that she was confused about the comment but had decided to “brush it off.”
Muniz, the former star of the sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle, added, “I think it was just Make Witney Uncomfortable Day.”
While some called the joke “inappropriate,” others defended Bergeron’s comment and said it was “funny.”
I don't think Tom Bergeron meant anything inappropriate in his remarks to Whitney Carson!!! He's funny!!!

Why didn’t someone ask Tom Bergeron what he meant by that comment? Your story never addresses that question! I thought it was inappropriate. https://t.co/sLEcJpGv6R

I'm very curious to see how Tom Bergeron will get out of this one…this is why #metoo is a thing #uncalledfor #footinhismouth

I wish I had the chance to ask @WitneyCarson how badly she wanted to slap @Tom_Bergeron tonight?
