Donald Glover has not paid much attention to the online fervor over his “This is America” video, telling Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday that he hasn’t been on the internet in a week.
“I haven’t been on the internet since Thursday night before ‘Saturday Night Live,’” he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” though he admitted that his friends have sent him a couple of the think pieces. “I’m really sensitive.”
During Glover’s hosting and musical guest stint on the May 5th episode of the NBC sketch comedy show, he surprised fans by releasing the music video for “This is America,” one of the new songs from his latest album, and his last under the Childish Gambino moniker.
The video has been praised as an artistic, confrontational take on gun violence in American society, with guns being treated with care while corpses are dragged away.
But Glover claimed he hasn’t read any of those. Kimmel asked if he’s the type of guy who sees one negative thing and it makes him feel bad, to which Glover clarified: “It’s more like I see one negative thing and I track that person down. I’ll go into their Instagram and be like ‘he’s not so great. That baby’s not even that cute.’”
