Dolby Laboratories will roll out its new sound system in 20 theaters around the world, including five in California, the company announced Wednesday.
The audio technology giant is touting its new Dolby Atmos system as an upgrade from previous surround-sound speaker platforms, granting designers more control of sound movement and creating a more immersive movie-going experience.
"[It] enables you to give the illusion of there being an infinite number of channels throughout the hemisphere, all the way around you and all above your head," Vice President Ioan Allen said in a promotional video on the company's website. "Not every film will have very much to say, probably, above your head, but the very fact that we can put a sound anywhere in that hemisphere is a very exciting breakthrough."
The company first unveiled the new platform in April at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Dolby will install its new system in 14 theaters across North America, two in Europe and four in China.
According to a press release, Dolby will announce which theaters will be the first to feature the Atmos system during the premiere of Disney/Pixar's "Brave."
