The first trailer for “White God,” winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Prize Un Certain Regard Award, makes the movie about rampaging dogs look like a mix of “Homeward Bound” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
That is to say, it’s both heartbreaking and horrific.
The film from Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo starts off with a young girl’s father separating her from her mixed-breed canine — apparently, unacceptable in his apartment complex — and takes a terrifying turn when the dog, named Hagen, rallies an army of mutts to rampage through the city as he finds his way home.
“White God,” hitting theaters with subtitles on March 27, won raves for the way it uses what could be a horror-movie scenario to create a potent metaphor for class oppression.
