Disney kicked off an enormous 10-week marketing push for “Tron: Legacy” on Sunday, as the studio hopes the 3-D remake of the 1982 sci-fi cult-classic will generate the same sort of box office buzz — and cash — as “Avatar.”
The studio is planning special weekly events ahead of the film’s release, slated for December 17, each marking “a major milestone in the countdown."
Those events include:
>> “Tron Night: An IMAX 3D Experience,” a free event on October 28 which will include n 20-plus-minute sneak peek of the film.
>> 3-D midnight screenings of IMAX, tickets for which go on sale today at Disney.com/TRON.
>> “TRON Tuesdays” — the alliterative-friendly weekly rollout of teaser content from the film, online on Facebook and “through select broadcast outlets."
>> A “Get on the Grid” sweepstakes, with the grand prize being a trip for four to Disney California Adventure Park’s “ElecTRONica,” a “nighttime street event featuring a dynamic visual- and music-based experience, a re-creation of Flynn’s Arcade.”
>> The launch “TRON: Evolution” – a massive multiplayer online role-playing game — for all major home video game consoles, Windows PC and handheld platforms, from Disney Interactive Studios on December.
>> Also that day, Walt Disney Records will release the “TRON: Legacy” official motion picture Soundtrack, scored by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk.
