Is Joss Whedon Saying Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch Will be in ‘Avengers 2’?

Director hints at new characters at "Iron Man 3" premiere

"The Avengers" universe is about to get bigger, Joss Whedon revealed at the premiere of "Iron Man 3."

The director and screenwriter of the global box office smash said he has finished a first draft of the screenplay to the superhero adventure sequel. He revealed that Earth's Mightiest Heroes may soon add to their ranks.

"I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic book; a brother-sister act," Whedon told Yahoo! Movies. "They’re in the movie. That’s exciting."

He did not reveal who the characters were, but speculation on comic book and movie blogs immediately focused on the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The two are the mutant offspring of main X-Men villain Magneto. Quicksilver has the power of super speed, while Scarlet Witch casts hexes that often manifest as energy bolts.

The addition of the Scarlet Witch would bring a new female to the mix, and mean that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow would no longer be the sole representative of her gender.

Despite the massive success of "The Avengers," which racked up $1.5 billion globally, Whedon said he isn't overly intimated about a follow-up.

"I try not to think of it as topping 'The Avengers,' I try to think of this as its own movie," Whedon said.
