A year ago, Dick Van Dyke stood on the stage at the annual Screen Actors Guild awards and honored co-star Mary Tyler Moore for her achievements in film and television. Well, the tides have turned, and now it's Van Dyke who will be saluted for his iconic performances in the likes of "Mary Poppins" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show."
Van Dyke will receive the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award, the actors' union said Tuesday. He'll pick up his honor at the televised awards show, which premieres live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013.
In a career that's spanned six decades, Dick Van Dyke has played a dancing chimney sweep with an iffy cockney accent, a happily married comedy writer and a crime-solving doctor. He has won five Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy award.
His film and stage credits include the CBS procedural "Diagnosis Murder," the film and stage versions of "Bye Bye Birdie" and the movie adaptation of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." He recently appeared opposite Ben Stiller in "A Night at the Museum."
“Dick is the consummate entertainer — an enormously talented performer whose work has crossed nearly every major category of entertainment," Ken Howard, SAG-AFTRA co-president, said in a statement. "From his career-changing Broadway turn in 'Bye Bye Birdie' and his deadpan humor in the Emmy winning 'Dick Van Dyke Show,' to his unforgettable performance as Bert in 'Mary Poppins,' he sets a high bar for actors."
