Democrat Control of House, Senate Hangs in Balance in Midterm Elections

Democrats’ control of Congress still hung in the balance after midterm elections on Tuesday but a feared red wave failed to materialize despite dire warnings of a Republican sweep in the midterm elections.

John Fetterman flipped a Republican Senate seat in Pennsylvania to the Democrats’ column in a victory over TV doctor Mehmet Oz, and Democrats won dozens of other key House, Senate and governors’ races nationwide. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D – New Hampshire) and Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colorado) held off Republican challengers to win re-election.

Still, Ohio Republican “Hillbilly Elegy” author J.D. Vance beat back a challenge from Rep. Tim Ryan to retain the seat previously held by Republican Rob Portman. Meanwhile, North Carolina Democrat Cheri Beasley managed to come surprisingly close against Republican Ted Budd, who won by 50.7% to 47.1%, with 98% of the vote counted.

Control of the evenly divided Senate is still up in the air, with too-close-to-call races in Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin and Georgia — where Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker may head into a December runoff.

It’s typical for the party controlling the White House to lose seats two years later, including an average of 28 seats in the House — which would deprive Democrats of their slim majority. But despite President Joe Biden’s unpopularity and concerns about rising inflation and a looming recession, Democratic candidates have overperformed to expectations.

While Republicans have already picked up many seats in the House, particularly in districts that have been newly redrawn to favor their candidates, many vulnerable Democrats managed to eke out victories. There were also surprise showings nationwide, including for Colorado Democrat Adam Frisch, who seems poised to unseat right-wing firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert by 50.6% to 49.4%, with 93% of the vote tallied.

Democrats, who have made the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade a central issue, found broad support for candidates backing abortion rights. In addition, voters in California, Michigan and Vermont backed ballot measures to to enshrine abortion protections in their state constitutions; a Kentucky referendum to declare no right to abortion in that state’s constitution was too close to call.

In order to take control of the House, Republicans would need to gain just five seats. Analysts have admitted that the party’s odds look pretty good given that in the 22 midterm elections from 1934 to 2018, the president’s party has lost 28 House seats on average, according to the New York Times.

Though results for races, especially those in key states, might take days to roll in, many have their eyes peeled for Republican candidates who might not accept election results and claim election fraud, especially given ongoing false election claims regarding the 2020 presidential race.
