David Lynch Rounds Up the Usual Suspects for AFI Fest

Offbeat director picks a mainstream group of films for Hollywood festival

David Lynch has chosen. And the choices made by the AIF Fest 2010’s venturesome, eccentric Guest Artistic Director are pretty much the same filmmakers that any number of film aficionados would have picked: Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, Stanley Kubrick, Jacques Tati and Billy Wilder.

David LynchLynch’s selections, which will screen during the November 4 – 11 run of what is technically called the AFI Fest 2010 presented by Audi, are five unassailable classics: Bergman’s “Hour of the Wolf,” Kubrick’s “Lolita,” Tati’s “Mon Oncle,” Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” and Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard.”

“I picked these particular films because they are the ones that have inspired me most. I think each is a masterpiece,” said Lynch in the AFI press release announcing his selections.

“If people have already seen them, they are certainly worth being seen again.  And if people haven’t seen them, here is an opportunity to see what I consider cinema at its best.”

Lynch, the director of “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet,” “The Elephant Man” and “Mulholland Drive,” is the first person to be given the Guest Artistic Director position with AFI Fest. He also designed this year's festival poster.

The festival will take place in Hollywood, largely at Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Mann Chinese 6.
