David Cronenberg has joined the growing list of big-screen talents taking up small-screen projects.
"Naked Lunch" director Cronenberg is embarking on his first television venture, "Knifeman."

The series, based on the Wendy Moore novel, follows "the trials and triumphs of a radical, self-educated surgeon" who goes to "extraordinary and unorthodox lengths … to uncover the secrets of the human body," according to Media Rights Capital, which is producing the series.

Cronenberg will direct the pilot episode of the series, and executive-produce the series. "Friday Night Lights" writer/producer Rolin Jones, who's writing the series, is also executive-producing, along with Sam Raimi, Josh Donen and Robert Zotnowsi are also executive-producing. Renee Tab of Sentient Entertainment is co-executive producing.
Media Rights Capital also produces the Kevin Spacey-starring series "House of Cards," which will premiere on Netflix this year.
