The Commission on Presidential Debates has announced the dates for its four general election debates in 2020.
The first primary and general presidential debate will take place on Sept. 29, 2020, at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. The following week, on Oct. 7, 2020, vice presidential candidates will take the stage at Salt Lake City’s University of Utah. The second round of presidential debates will happen on Oct. 15, 2020, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, while the third presidential debate will occur on Oct. 22, 2020, at Nashville’s Belmont University.
Each debate will begin at 9 p.m. ET and last for 90 minutes without commercials. The commission will announce further details about the format and who the moderators are at a later date.
CPD is a nonpartisan organization that has organized and sponsored all of the presidential and vice presidential debates since 1987. The commission says it does not receive any funding from political parties, specific candidates, or from the government. Former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush also joined the CPD last month as honorary co-chairs.
As for the remainder of this year, be prepared for at least two more debates for the Democratic presidential candidates. Next Tuesday, CNN and the New York Times will be hosting the fourth round. On Nov. 20, MSNBC and the Washington Post will co-host the fifth round in Georgia.
