"Dark Knight Rises" star Christian Bale drops in to cheer up the wounded following last week's massacre

"The Dark Knight Rises" star Christian Bale traveled to Aurora, Colo., to visit victims of the horrific shooting at a midnight screening of his film last week, the Denver Post reports.

A spokeswoman for Warner Bros. told the paper that Bale "is there as himself" and not as a representative for the studio.

Twelve moviegoers died and dozens others were injured early Friday morning when a gunman sprayed bullets in a theater where "The Dark Knight Rises" was playing. Police have arrested 24-year-old James Holmes, who is expected to be formally charged on July 30. The judge in the case on Tuesday ruled that no cameras or recording equipment would be allowed in the courtroom during that hearing.

Wisconsin native Carey Rottman, who was shot at the screening, posted two pictures of himself with Bale at the hospital on his Facebook page.

Bale expressed his sentiments for the victims last week.

"Words cannot express the horror that I feel,” Bale said in a statement. “I cannot begin to truly understand the pain and grief of the victims and their loved ones, but my heart goes out to them.”

Warner Bros., meanwhile, has donated an undisclosed sum to the victims via GivingFirst.org.
