FX has ordered the first original series for its new FXX network: "Chozen," an animated comedy from Danny McBride about a gay white rapper, fresh out of prison.
FXX, which launches Sept. 2, will focus more on comedy and target younger viewers than FX. It will air several current FX shows, including "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "The League."
But "Chozen," from the creative teams behind HBO's "Eastbound & Down" and FX's "Archer," is the first new show.
It is written and executive produced by Grant Dekernion, who will also write and rap the songs on the show. "Saturday Night Live" star Bobby Moynihan will provide the title character's speaking voice.
McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green from Rough House Pictures ("Eastbound & Down") are executive producing. Adam Reed and Matt Thompson of Floyd County Productions ("Archer") will also executive produce, and their company will animate the series, which is from FX Productions.
Besides Dekernion and Moynihan, others providing voices will include McBride, comedians Hannibal Buress and Nick Swardson, Michael Pena, Kathryn Hahn, and actor-rapper Method Man.
Nick Grad announced the show in his new capacity as president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.
“It’s great to be in business with Grant, Danny, Jody, David and Rough House and this is the perfect first series order for FXX,” said Grad. “'Chozen' is an outrageous and ballsy comedy, but it’s also a very smart examination of the rap culture.”
"It's wholly unique," Eric Schrier, the newly promoted president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, added.
