Here’s a somewhat surprising media move: Dan Abrams, NBC’s longtime chief legal analyst and the former MSNBC president, is switching teams to join ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Abrams, the founder of Mediaite, will be a legal analyst for “GMA” as well as an occasional weekend host.
ABC News president Ben Sherwood made the announcement in a memo. “I’ve known Dan since the start of his successful network career,” Sherwood wrote. “An insightful lawyer, he is also a high-impact broadcaster, commentator, analyst and entrepreneur.”
Abrams joins an already deep legal bench at ABC: “20/20” anchor Chris Cuomo, whose other title is “chief law and justice correspondent”; “Nightline” host Terry Moran, who is also ABC’s Supreme Court correspondent; and senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas.
Abrams called leaving NBC and MSNBC “the most difficult professional decision I have ever had to make.”
But Abrams said an “expanded role” — and the chance to work with Sherwood “who produced (and umm fixed) my first scripts and stories when I began my career as a correspondent at NBC News” was too good to pass up.
It’s also a big day for Abrams over at Mediaite. The Mary Sue, a sister site with the tagline “guide to girl geek culture,” launched on Monday.
It’s the fourth such spinoff for Abrams’ digital network — joining Styleite, Geekosystem and Sports Grid.
