Damian Lewis has exited “Billions” following Sunday’s fifth season finale of the Showtime drama.
The sixth season of the series, now without Lewis’s character, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, will debut in January.
“Thank you @SHO_Billions thank you @briankoppelman @DavidLevien,” Lewis tweeted Monday. “A pleasure and a privilege to play Axe for 5 seasons with some of the smartest, funniest most talented cast and crew I’ve worked with. I’ll miss the Billions family. Yep, some jobs are more than just a job…. Love.”
During Sunday’s Season 5 finale of “Billions,” Axe went on the run in Switzerland to hide out from New York State Attorney General Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti), after his billionaire rival Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) gained control of all of Axe’s companies.
The sixth season of “Billions” will star Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll and Maggie Siff and premiere on Sunday, January 23 at 9/8c. Daniel Breaker, who stars as Scooter, the brilliant and locked down Chief of Staff of Michael Prince (Stoll), has been upped to series regular for that batch of episodes.

Here’s the description for “Billions” Season 6, courtesy of Showtime: “In season six of ‘Billions,’ the dust of season five clears to reveal a world that has evolved. With Axe (Damian Lewis) gone and Michael Prince assuming his place, Chuck (Giamatti) must develop a new strategy that is keener and more sophisticated than before. All the players, from Wags (David Costabile) to Wendy (Siff), from Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) to Sacker (Condola Rashad), and of course Senior (Jeffrey DeMunn), must sharpen their weapons and look for new alliances in order to survive. The ground is ever shifting and the stakes absolute. New king, new war, new rules.”
“Billions” was created by Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin. Koppelman and Levien executive produce and serve as showrunners.
