What was supposed to be a sweet mother-daughter moment during the Oscar’s red carpet show, ended up becoming one of the night’s most awkward interviews.
When ABC host Lara Spencer asked actress Melanie Griffith whether she’s seen her daughter’s racy movie, “50 Shades of Grey,” clearly she struck upon a sore subject.
“No,” Griffith curtly replied. Scowling, Dakota Johnson said: “Maybe one day,” with a shrug.
But her mom isn’t so sure. “I don’t think I can. I think it would be strange,” she said. “Well she’s a really good actress, I don’t need to see that to know how good she is,” Griffith said after some attempts by Spencer at saving the scene.
The subject is an obvious sticking point between the pair, as Johnson digressed to a pouting teenager for a moment, snapping: “Alright! You don’t have to see it. Jesus Christ.”
The uncomfortable exchange set social media on fire, inspiring some harsh criticism as well as some pretty hilarious tweets.
