‘Daily Show’: John Oliver Comes Out Swinging on First Night as Host (Video)

It turns out Oliver doesn't need his Mary Poppins umbrella

John Oliver didn't get to do his jokes about Mary Poppins on his first night hosting "The Daily Show" — but it worked out just fine.

"Are you f—ing kidding me? Jon's been gone one day. One day. We had such a fun, gentle first show planned for you — a few harmless 'I'm British' jokes," Oliver said.

They included having tea mid-show and Oliver flying away holding an umbrella. Instead, viewers were treated to a skillful dissection of the flaws in the government's spying program.

As we wrote in our review last night, Stewart left the show in good hands.
