John Oliver didn't get to do his jokes about Mary Poppins on his first night hosting "The Daily Show" — but it worked out just fine.
Replacing Jon Stewart for the summer, Oliver expressed mock outrage that a major news story broke just as he arrived: News that the government is monitoring millions of Americans' phone and internet use.

"Are you f—ing kidding me? Jon's been gone one day. One day. We had such a fun, gentle first show planned for you — a few harmless 'I'm British' jokes," Oliver said.
They included having tea mid-show and Oliver flying away holding an umbrella. Instead, viewers were treated to a skillful dissection of the flaws in the government's spying program.
As we wrote in our review last night, Stewart left the show in good hands.
