The fantasy film “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” released in theaters 10 months ago, scored a big victory Sunday at the 2023 Critics Choice Awards, winning awards for Best Picture, Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan and Best Editing for Paul Rogers.
Brendan Fraser won the award for Best Actor for his emotional role as an overweight man in “The Whale.” In a possible precursor to the Oscars, the award marks Fraser’s first major prize of the season. Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett scored the Best Actress award for her acclaimed and awards-magnet role as a music conductor in “Tár.”
In other top film categories, Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) won Best Supporting Actress, backing up her recent Golden Globe win and solidifying her Oscar chances. Other film winners included Sarah Polley (“Women Talking”) for Best Original Screenplay, and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” for Best Animated Feature.
The epic Indian film “RRR” won two awards, for Best International Feature and Best Original Song. The prize for Best Score went to Hildur Guðnadóttir for her work on “Tár.” Guðnadóttir was also nominated this year for “Women Talking,” and won an Oscar in 2020 for “Joker.”
Technical category winners were spread among several films, with “Top Gun: Maverick” winning for its cinematography, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” for film editing, “Babylon” for production design, “Elvis” for hair and makeup, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” for costume design, and “Avatar: The Way to Water” for visual effects.
In TV categories, “Better Call Saul” took awards for Best Drama and Best Actor in a Drama (Bob Odenkirk). Zendaya took home best actress in a drama for “Euphoria.” On the comedy series side, “Abbott Elementary” won best series, with Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) winning best actress and best actor.
“The Dropout” scored the awards for best limited series and best actress in a limited series for its star Amanda Seyfried. Daniel Radcliffe won best actor in a limited series or TV movie for his role in the biopic “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
The show was hosted by Chelsea Handler at the Fairmont Century Plaza. Also at the ceremony, Jeff Bridges was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award while Janelle Monáe received the SeeHer Award.
During its 28-year history the Critics Choice Awards have matched the Oscars Best Picture winner 15 times and differed 12 times. But over the past six years, as Academy membership grew more diverse and more international, the two groups have agreed only twice, with “The Shape of Water” in 2017 and “Nomadland” in 2020.
Last year, of the 18 categories that the Critics Choice Awards and the Oscars have in common, the CCA went to the film that would go on to win the Oscar in 12 of them, including Best Director and all four acting categories. But the six categories that did not match included Best Picture, which went to “The Power of the Dog” at CCA and “CODA” at the Oscars.
In the television categories, where different eligibility dates make direct comparison harder, last year’s Critics Choice winners matched the 2022 Emmy winners 10 times in the 17 comparable categories.
The Critics Choice Association is the largest critics organization in North America, with more than 600 critics and entertainment journalists covering both film and television. (Members include TheWrap’s Steve Pond and Alonso Duralde, as well as Wrap critics Robert Abele, Carlos Aguilar and Elizabeth Weitzman.)
