“Crazy Rich Asians” will get a new TV series adaptation at Max, TheWrap has learned, with film writer Adele Lim and director Jon M. Chu attached as executive producers.

The project is in the development stage at the streamer and will also be adapted from Kevin Kwan’s book series of the same name. It’s unclear if the show, which is produced by Warner Bros. Television, will be connected to the hit 2018 film that starred Constance Wu and Henry Golding.

The “Crazy Rich Asians” film was a cultural phenomenon upon its release, grossing over $230 million worldwide. The first book was published in 2013, and expanded with two other books “China Rich Girlfriend” in 2015 and “Rich People Problems” in 2017. This is the latest potential project to expand the IP, with Chu — who directed the hit film “Wicked — also attached to develop a Broadway musical based on the book series with Warner Bros. Theater Ventures.

Lim has signed on as writer and showrunner for the new one-hour drama, which just opened its development room. Beyond “Crazy Rich Asians,” Lim is known for her 2023 film “Joy Ride,” which starred Stephanie Hsu, Ashley Park, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu. The Lionsgate film was her directorial debut feature.

Lim also wrote Disney’s 2021 film “Raya and the Last Dragon.” Currently, she is directing and producing “The Princess Diaries 3” with Anne Hathaway. Her previous credits include TV series such as “One Tree Hill” and “Private Practice.” She is repped by Paradigm and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis LLP.

Kwan also serves as an executive producer, along with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who also developed and produced the film via their Color Force production company. Naia Cucukov also EPs via Lim’s company 100 Tigers.

SK Global Entertainment’s Chloe Dan also produces the project.
