The Hollywood Foreign Press failed to nominate a woman in the Best Director category at the Golden Globes when it announced its nominees on Monday, but don’t worry, they made good with the women of Hollywood in a sketch on “Conan” the same night.
Conan O’Brien brought out an HFPA “spokesperson” to address the backlash over the snub in the Best Director category, and he said as a way to honor women at the ceremony, every female nominee and attendee will go home with a special gift.
“This year, every woman who attends the ceremony will receive an official Golden Globes apron,” the rep said. Conan’s next follow-up to that answer was to ask why don’t the men get an apron? “Why would they need them,” the rep replied to a big groan from Conan’s crowd.
On Monday, the Globes snubbed eligible Best Director candidates like Greta Gerwig, Alma Har’el, Marielle Heller and many more in favor of an all-male group that included Bong Joon-ho, Sam Mendes, Todd Phillips, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. In the 77-year history of the Globes, only five women have ever been nominated for Best Director between seven different films.
But Conan wasn’t done just yet.
“We anticipate Christian Bale will thank his wife in his acceptance speech, and I think it will be a major acknowledgment for women everywhere,” the fake Globes rep told the host. “Why is this one category getting all the attention? Why is no one talking about the great men snubbed in the Best Actress category?”
