Conan O’Brien hosted the Oscars for the first time ever on Sunday night and, during his opening monologue, he managed to earn audible shock from the crowd with a joke about “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón.

The moment came just a few minutes into the opener, as O’Brien called out the Best Picture nominees and what he loved about them. But his callout to Gascón actually came while discussing the Mikey Madison-starring “Anora.”

“’Anora’ uses the f-word 479 times. That’s more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” he joked, pretending to be said publicist and angrily screaming into a fake phone.

The joke earned a very large, very audible wave of “oohs” from the crowd, but O’Brien wasn’t done, as he offered further advice for the actress, who was indeed in attendance herself at the show.

“Karla if you are going to tweet about the Oscars tonight, my name is Jimmy Kimmel,” he said, apparently assuming she would not have anything nice to say about the proceedings.

You can watch the moment from O’Brien’s monologue in the video above.
