‘Community’ Death: They Really Killed Off …

One of the most quirky characters — on a show full of 'em — bit the dust in Thursday's "Law & Order"-spoofing episode

(Spoiler alert: Don't read this if you don't want to hear about "Basic Lupine Urology," Thursday night's episode of NBC's "Community.")

Producers had promised a member of the Greendale community would bite the dust on "Community" this season, and in Thursday's episode it happened: R.I.P. Star-Burns.

NBC Universal

The, ahem, mature college student — real name: Alex Osbourne — was the campus drug dealer who rocked a top hat and the star-shaped sideburns that earned him his nickname. And it was his career that killed him, as a DIY meth lab exploded in the trunk of his car.

Actor Dino Stamatopoulos, who plays — er, played — Star-Burns, is also a consulting producer and writer on the show, so he won't be completely M.I.A. from "Community" action.

But Star-Burns and his memorable facial fur will get a sendoff in next week's episode, "Course Listing Unavailable," when the Greendale gang holds a funeral in — where else? — the cafeteria. Britta (Gillian Jacobs) uses her psych class knowledge (or lack thereof) to play grief counselor for the study group, and Chang (Ken Jeong) tries to snag more control of campus security when a riot breaks out at the memorial service.
