The bizarre Colin Farrell/Rachel Weisz film “The Lobster” led all films in nominations for the British Independent Film Awards on Tuesday, with director Yorgos Lanthimos’ twisted fantasy picking up seven nominations, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and acting nods for Farrell, Olivia Colman and Ben Whishaw.

The film outpaced a number of more conventional awards films expected to compete for Oscars, including “Brooklyn” (five nominations), “Suffragette” (four) and “The Danish Girl” (one, for Alicia Vikander).

Justin Kurzel‘s new version of “MacBeth,” with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, received six nominations, as did Andrew Haigh‘s “45 Years,” with Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling.

Asif Kapadia’s Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy” made a strong showing, joining “Brooklyn” and “Ex Machina” with five nominations, including recognition in the Best British Independent Film and Best Director categories to go with its documentary nom.

The contenders in the top category, Best British Independent Film, are “Amy,” “Ex Machina,” “45 Years,” “The Lobster” and “MacBeth,” with the same five films repeating in the Best Director category.

One intriguing race comes in the Best Supporting Actor category, where Domhnall Gleeson was nominated for “Brooklyn” and will be competing against his father Brendon, who was recognized for “Suffragette.”

Other acting nominees include Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston and Luke Evans.

The nominations were announced on Tuesday morning in London by Gemma Chan and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

The winners will be announced at the Moet British Independent Film Awards on Dec. 6.
