On Monday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert paid musical tribute to Trump’s recent decision to change his permanent address to Palm Beach, Florida, with a parody of the theme from “New York, New York” that thumbed its nose at the departing POTUS.
Trump, a lifelong New Yorker, filed last week for a change in primary residency from Manhattan to Palm Beach, Florida. While the times cited an anonymous Trump administration official who said the move was for tax purposes, Trump later tweeted “I have been treated very badly by the political leaders of both the city and state. Few have been treated worse.”
Skip ahead to the Late Show’s tribute, which featured a Sinatra-esque crooner singing modified lyrics to “New York, New York,” originally written for Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film of the same name. In case you can’t watch the video yet, the parody lyrics are:
Start spreading the news
Trump’s leavin’ today
He wants to be apart from it, New York, New York
Go tell the fake news
He’s longing to stray
Just like he’s done on every wife, uno, dos and tres
I want to wake up, in a city without a Trump
And let him stay in Palm Beach, at his tacky gold dump
His W-2s
Are holding the clues
Of all the sleazy deals he’s cut, in old New York
Trump’s time now, here is done
I hope he, takes his sons
And Rudy Too, New York, New York
