Christian Bale gave a shoutout to the devil for inspiring him to play former Vice President Dick Cheney in “Vice” during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

“Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role,” Bale said, which received modest laughs from the crowd.

Bale was accepting the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for his role in “Vice.” The comment came a moment after Bale said that he would be “cornering the market on charisma-free a–holes.”

“What do you think, Mitch McConnell next?” Bale asked, referring to the Senate Majority Leader. “That would be good, wouldn’t it?”

Heading into Sunday, Bale had been gaining awards-season buzz for his portrayal as Cheney in the Adam McKay comedy-drama. The film, despite some critical acclaim, has struggled to drive significant ticket sales since it was released in December. “Vice” chronicles Cheney’s role in shaping George W. Bush’s eight years in the White House.
