In Fox Searchlight’s forthcoming drama “Gifted,” Chris Evans plays Frank, a single man thrust into raising his elementary school-aged niece, Mary (Mckenna Grace).
Soon it becomes clear the young girl is a math genius, prompting the adults in her life to posit different ideas about how to raise her.
“I promised my sister I’d give Mary a normal life,” says Frank, when presented with the idea of sending his niece to a school for exceptional children.
A custody battle ensues between Frank and his mother over the young prodigy’s upbringing — raising questions about whether Frank is stunting her future potential.
Also starring Jenny Slate, Octavia Spencer and Lindsay Duncan, “Gifted” is directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer,” “The Amazing Spider-Man”) and opens in theaters Apr. 12.
