CBS led the nominees for the 33rd annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards Thursday, picking up 43 nods for its coverage of the fall of Tripoli, the botched Fast and Furious gun smuggling investigation and the Dover Mortuary scandal.
The bulk of those, 34 in all, came for its "60 Minutes" newsmagazine.
PBS was second with 37 nominations for programs and documentaries produced through programs like Nova and Frontline.
Among the other broadcasters with news divisions, NBC received 20 nominations and ABC picked up 17. HBO, which has invested heavily in documentaries in recent years, earned 15 nominations for films on President Ronald Reagan and the military's former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
Of the major nightly news broadcasts, "NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" picked up 8 nominations, "CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley" received 5 nominations and "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" earned 2 nominations.
The nominations come across 42 categories, including Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Outstanding Interview, and Best Documentary.
The awards will be presented on Monday, October 1 at a ceremony at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
