EXCLUSIVE
CBS Films has acquired the screen adaptation of Kody Keplinger's youth novel "The DUFF" and is in negotiations with McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision to produce it, an individual close to the studio confirmed.
The insider said CBS Films will likely change the film's title.
Josh Cagan ("Bandslam") adapted the comedy novel, which is set in high school and has narrative elements similar to "Easy A" and "Mean Girls."
In the book, a slightly awkward teen girl becomes tired of being the "DUFF" — i.e. the designated ugly fat friend — to her two better looking BFFs. She then sets out to re-invent herself for her senior year.
Cagan is represented by H2F Entertainment's Chris Fenton and WME, which also represents McG.
