Catherine Zeta-Jones, who proved her song-and-dance chops with her Oscar-winning role in "Chicago," is returning to musicals.
The "Ocean's Twelve" actress will play a comic villain — the mayor's wife — in New Line's "Rock of Ages," an 
adaptation of the Broadway musical, director Adam Shankman told TheWrap Wednesday.
The director told TheWrap that Zeta-Jones, who recently announced that she had checked herself into a hospital to treat her bipolar disorder, "sounds honestly better than I've ever heard her sound"
Shankman said that Zeta-Jones is excited to get back to work.
"She just said to me, 'Honey, I just cannot wait to get down to Miami and sing and dance with you.'" he said, adding, "She sounded excited — super-relieved to have all this behind her and addressed, and just super-energized."
The movie is filming in Miami.
The cast that includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Mary J. Blige and Russell Brand.
Rumors that Brand's wife, Katy Perry, would be in the movie are false, Shankman said.
"That was the weirdest rumor in the world … There was never any reality to that."
Zeta-Jones will sing and dance in the movie.
"Her big number is 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot' — Pat Benetar," Shankman said. "And I think she's in Twisted Sister's 'We're Not Gonna Take It.' I really want to create a big number for her with 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot.' A real show-stopper."
"Rock of Ages" is now in rehearsals in Miami Beach.
The movie is a love story told through the music of Pat Benetar, Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, Twisted Sister and other artists from the 1980s. Cruise plays the rocker Stacee Jaxx, and will sing the Bon Jovi anthem "Dead or Alive."
The movie also stars Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige and Alec Baldwin.
Chris D'Arienzo, Michael Arndt and Alan Loeb are writing the adaptation and Jennifer Gibgot, Carl Levin, Tobey Maguire, Scott Prisand and Matt Weaver are producing.
The movie has a release date of June 1, 2012.
