“Captain America: Civil War” is outselling all previous Marvel movies on Fandango, the online ticket giant said Thursday.
The superhero movie has sold more tickets at the same point in the current sales cycle — meaning two weeks before its theatrical release — than Marvel’s biggest adventures, including both “Avengers” movies and “Captain America: Winter Soldier.”
A Fandango survey revealed “Civil War” is the most anticipated action film of the summer, while “Finding Dory” was voted the most anticipated family film of the season. “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” ranked second and third, respectively, in the family category.
Sony’s all-female “Ghostbusters” is the summer’s most anticipated comedy, with “Central Intelligence” and “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” following.
Fandango’s survey also revealed that 60 percent of voters would go see more movies in theaters this summer than last year.
“According to our survey, fans will be spending more time at the multiplex this summer,” says Fandango managing editor Erik Davis. “Last year’s record-breaking movie line-up inspires fans to return to theaters, and this summer there is truly something for everyone. The season kicks off in May with Marvel’s best movie yet, ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ while ‘Finding Dory’ will catch the family audience in June, a fresh, female-driven’ Ghostbusters’ will attract comedy fans in July, and the ‘Suicide Squad’ is sure to generate a lot of love for the supervillains in August.”
“Civil War” has been met with praise from both fans lucky enough to attend early screenings and critics, who contributed to its 96 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. Analysts previously told TheWrap that the May 6 release is looking at an opening weekend of more than $200 million.
