Bruno Mars is headed to the big screen. The singer has signed a deal with Disney to star in and produce a narrative feature film that will also feature original music that he will write and perform, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the movie will be music-themed and will be a theatrical, narrative feature film.
Mitchell Leib, president of music and soundtracks at Disney’s film group, was integral in brokering the deal between Mars and Disney.
Disney also recently signed a massive deal to distribute the filmed, stage musical of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton,” which will feature the original Broadway cast and was performed live on stage back in 2016 during the height of the show’s Tony-winning run. That film will open in theaters in October 2021.
Mars has previously lent his voice to the animated film “Rio 2,” and he’s also served as a host and musical performer on “Saturday Night Live.” He also appeared in the movie “Honeymoon in Vegas” in 1992 as a child actor. He’s won 11 Grammys, has sold 200 million singles and 26 million albums and has twice performed at the Super Bowl, both as a headliner and as a special guest alongside Coldplay and Beyoncé.
Mars is represented by WME and Fletcher & Freifeld.
