The brushback against an Indiana law that critics and celebrities argue will allow businesses to discriminate against LGBT customers continued Thursday as Broadway star Broadway star Audra McDonald went on a Twitter tirade against Governor Mike Pence.
On Thursday, Indiana passed a religious freedom bill that offers protections to individuals and businesses. Critics say critics say the bill is a license for businesses to discriminate against LGBT customers based on religious objections.
“This bill is not about discrimination,” Pence said. “If I thought it legalized discrimination I would have vetoed it.”
As TheWrap reported, Hollywood is up in arms over the law: “You’re an asshole @govpenceIN,” Miley Cyrus posted on Instagram. “A sad day for all in #INDIANA,” Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black tweeted.
McDonald, whose band has gay members, asked Pence what they are supposed to do upon entering Indiana for a performance.
.@GovPenceIN Some in my band are gay & we have 2 gigs in your state next month. Should we call ahead to make sure the hotel accepts us all?

.@GovPenceIN or could you maybe send us a list of where its okay for us to go? Might the law apply to me?(I’m black). — Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015

.@GovPenceIN or maybe I should fire my gay band members just to be on the safe side. — Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN Or MAYBE…we need to stick to singing in states that don’t legislate hate?
— Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
.@GovPenceIN Or MAYBE I donate the money I make in your state while Im there to organizations that will combat your hateful legislation. — Audra McDonald (@AudraEqualityMc) March 26, 2015
McDonald then previewed who she’ll be supporting in the 2016 campaign.
.@GovPenceIN Yep. That’s what I’ll do. Hey @HRC get ready for a little money coming your way from Indiana via me to you! Have at it!

The controversy over the law will surely impact Governor Pence, who’s rumored to be a presidential candidate.
