IMDb has revealed its Top 10 Stars and Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2019, with “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson coming in No. 1 on the first list and “The Boys” star Erin Moriarty topping the second, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
In addition, TheWrap has learned exclusively that “Stranger Things” star Dacre Montgomery — who is No. 5 on this year’s Top Stars list and No. 2 among the Breakout Stars rankings — has been given the IMDb STARmeter Award, an honor shared by Larson, IMDb’s No. 1 star of 2019 and the recipient of the 2015 IMDb Breakout STARmeter Award.
“Rather than base its annual rankings on small statistical samplings, reviews of professional critics, or box office performance, IMDb determines its definitive top 10 lists using data from IMDbPro STARmeter rankings, which are based on the actual page views of more than 200 million monthly visitors to IMDb,” the website told TheWrap.
Along with Larson, the list of Top 10 Stars included, in order, Moriarty (yes, she made both lists), Emilia Clarke, Naomi Scott, Dacre Montgomery, Zachary Levi, Keanu Reeves, Rosa Salazar, Margot Robbie and Joaquin Phoenix.
The list of Top 10 breakouts included, in order, Moriarty, Montgomery, Levi, Salazar, Elizabeth Lail, Margaret Qualley, Isabela Merced, Emma Mackey, Maya Hawke and Lucy Boynton.
“The IMDbPro STARmeter chart has proven to be a keenly accurate predictor of breakthrough career moments, and we are pleased to see our 2015 Breakout IMDb STARmeter Award recipient, Brie Larson, rank as the No 1 top star of 2019,” said Matt Kumin, head of IMDbPro. “This year’s No. 1 Breakout Star Erin Moriarty spent seven consecutive weeks on the IMDbPro STARmeter Top 10 chart in 2019 when The Boys premiered on Prime Video — an impressive feat that bodes well for continued career success.”
Montgomery received his 2019 IMDb STARmeter Award in the “Breakout Star” category during a recent visit to the set of “The IMDb Show,” which you can view here. The honor recognizes “entertainment industry luminaries who are fan favorites on the IMDbPro STARmeter chart,” according to IMDb.
The “Stranger Things” actor’s performances in both Seasons 2 and 3 has made him a top performer on the IMDbPro STARmeter chart in recent years, including multiple weeks in the No. 1 spot, according to the site.
“We spent nine months working on Season 3 [of ‘Stranger Things’] so for it to finally come to fruition and for Billy’s story arc to have an evolution and a resolve was really exciting,” Montgomery said. “I feel flattered to have been given that opportunity and to have the audience respond so well to that character and that world. I’d like to thank IMDb for this award and all of the fans out there who made this happen. I’ve been an IMDb user for a long time so when my STARmeter was No. 1, it represented everything I had been working towards. This symbolizes a lot to me.”
Previous IMDb STARmeter Award recipients in the “Breakout Star” category include Larson, Jacob Elordi, Pom Klementieff, Miles Teller and Olivia Cooke.
The IMDb Best of 2019 section features a variety of year-end Top 10 lists, more of which will be unveiled in the coming weeks, as well as retrospective photo galleries, trailers, original videos (including an In Memoriam video), and other year-end coverage, according to IMDb. You can see last year’s list here.
